Egron Lundgren
Egron Sellif Lundgren (born December 18, 1815 in Stockholm , † December 23, 1875 there ) was a Swedish painter and writer .
Life
At the age of twenty, Lundgren began to study at the art academy in his hometown from 1835 . After graduating, he went to Paris in 1839 , where he studied for two years in Léon Cogniet's studio . Lundgren then went to Italy and settled in Rome for eight years . There he gave up oil painting and turned to watercolor and gouache painting. From Italy he went to Spain and from here to England. Through Queen Victoria he got numerous commissions, the first scenes of which from Shakespeare's comedies had the subject.
When war broke out in India in 1858, a house in Manchester proposed that he go there at his own expense to make drawings from the campaign. Returning home with a portfolio of 500 pictures, he organized an exhibition and as a result became one of the selected 30 members of the Society of Painters in Water Colors .
In 1860 he returned to Sweden, later visiting Egypt, Spain and England for the second time. The latter two countries offered him most of the motifs for his pictures, almost all of which are in England. One praises his great mastery over the finest nuances of colors, his ability to grasp quickly and to give the effect of color and light with just a few strokes, namely to hit the characteristic, while the drawing is not correct everywhere. Just as great as his reputation as a watercolorist in England is that of a witty travel writer in Sweden.
Egron Sellif Lundgren died on December 23, 1875 in Stockholm at the age of 60.
