Karl Asplund

Karl Asplund (born April 27, 1890 in Jäder , Södermanland ; died April 3, 1978 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish poet , art historian , writer and translator . As an art critic , he also wrote articles for magazines.

Life

Asplund was a son of the merchant Conrad Asplund and his wife Vendela Maria (née Sahlin). His older brother Erik Asplund (1888–1974) was a botanist. After graduating from school in Nyköping in 1908 , he studied art history at Uppsala University and graduated in 1911 with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1912 he published his first work, Studentrum , a collection of short stories. In 1913, Världsliga visor dikter followed . In 1913 he graduated in philosophy at the University of Stockholm , where he in 1915 with a two-part monograph on the watercolourists Egron Lundgren Dr. phil. received his doctorate .

From 1916 he worked for the auction house "Bukowskis konsthandel", where he was managing director from 1929 to 1953. From 1914 to 1921 he worked as an art critic for Dagens Nyheter and then from 1922 to 1934 for Svenska Dagbladet . He wrote studies on Swedish artists such as Ivar Arosenius (1878–1909) or Axel Fridell (1894–1935) as well as articles on Swedish artists for the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present . Asplund was active in the Swedish writers' association " Svenska PEN " since 1922 . He also worked as a translator and translated works in English or French, such as Land of Heart's Desire by William Butler Yeats . In 1955 he was awarded the Dobloug Prize .

Asplund was married twice and had a daughter Karin (* 1942):

  • since 1918 with Astrid (née Fredriksson, 1896–1924), who died early of pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • with Viran (nee Sjödin, * 1900)
