Ivar Axel Henrik Arosenius (born October 8, 1878 in Gothenburg , Västra Götaland district , died January 1, 1909 in Älvängen ) was a Swedish painter and picture book author. He died of hemophilia when he was only 30 years old .

Life

Arosenius was the son of the railway engineer Henrik Alfred Arosenius (1841-1901) and his wife Sigrid Elisabet (née Rydén, 1846-1929). He attended high school in Gothenburg and began studying in the autumn of 1896 at the drawing and painting school of Valand (Gothenburg Museum). Here he made friends with Gerhard Henning (1880–1967). From August 30, 1898 to 1900 he studied at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan Stockholm . In November 1899 he became a "free student" of Richard Bergh at the school of the artists' association. In 1901 he returned to study at the painting school in Valand and took part in a student exhibition arranged by Carl Wilhelmson . He spent the summers of 1902 and 1903 partly with his friend and future brother-in-law Ernst Spolén in Torsby north of Fryksdal. In 1903 and 1904 he went on short study trips that took him to Berlin, Munich and Paris. In 1905 he returned to Sweden and in 1906 married Ida (Eva) Andrea Cecilia (nee Adler, born November 29, 1879), the daughter of the milk merchant J. Andersson. They first settled in Åby near Norrköping , where their daughter Eva (Lillan) was born, and later they lived in Älvängen on a farm owned by his wife's family.

The painter Erik Herman Arosenius (1880–1953) was his brother.

Works (selection)

Having suffered from hemophilia since birth, his life was severely restricted. As a child he was unable to play outdoors with other children, so he imagined the world in his imagination. His style was influenced by the illustrator Albert Engström (1869–1940) and even more so by the Danish painter Ole Kruse (1868–1948). In 1902 he began to develop his own style. He created especially watercolors but also portraits in oil.
