Hide Your Heart is the title of a song written by Paul Stanley , Desmond Child and Holly Knight , first recorded by Bonnie Tyler in 1988 for her album Hide Your Heart (released in some countries under the title Notes From America ) and on various albums since then different artist has appeared.

content

The song tells a classic love story that has been transposed into modern times: a young man (“Johnny”) falls madly in love with a girl (“Rosa”) who, however, already has a lover (“Tito”). Tito thinks Rosa is his property and keeps her under constant surveillance. Nevertheless, she meets with Johnny, but tells him that they should never see each other again. The two are betrayed, however, and Tito seeks revenge. Johnny and Rosa meet again, this time on a roof, and do not notice that Tito arrives with a gun. He shoots Johnny, who dies in Rosa's arms.

Emergence

Paul Stanley had begun songwriting for a song called Bite Down Hard when he reached out to Holly Knight to find a suitable melody for the title. Knight had already started a song with the same title, so Bite Down became Hard Hide Your Heart . Knight and Stanley worked on the melody and chorus together, then Stanley turned to Desmond Child to help write the verses.

Hide Your Heart was already considered by Kiss for the album Crazy Nights in 1987 , but fell through with the final song selection. Stanley played the song on his solo tour in 1989 in front of an audience and announced it as "a song that has not yet been found on any Kiss album".

Stanley made a demo tape for various music publishers together, that the title Hide Your Heart, Time Traveler, best one for you, do not let go and When two Hearts Collide contained, and he offered Hide Your Heart former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley on .

Recordings

At almost the same time, various artists became interested in recording the title. Bonnie Tyler was the first to show interest in singing the song. Tyler was working on an album with Desmond Child at the time, and her recording of Hide Your Heart also earned her the title for the CD. Holly Knight played on Tyler's album keyboard and the bass player of the band Frehley's Comet , John Regan, also participated in the recordings as a session musician. Tyler's album, which Child produced, was released on May 1, 1988.

The singer Robin Beck worked in 1988 on her second album, Trouble or Nothing , which is also by Desmond Child produced was. Paul Stanley was featured on the album as the singer of backing vocals , but for the track Save up all Your Tears . Robin Beck also recorded Hide Your Heart , her album was released in 1989.

Ace Frehley recorded his version of the title for his album Trouble Walkin ', released on October 13, 1989 . The band included John Regan, who had previously worked with Bonnie Tyler on Hide Your Heart .

Stanley was able to convince the other members of his band when recording the album Hot in the Shade of the qualities of the title, and the group accepted him. The album was released on October 17, 1989, Hide Your Heart was released as a single , and a video clip was produced mixing scenes from the story with footage of the band playing on a rooftop. Kiss reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the single on December 16, 1989 and stayed on the hit list for 10 weeks. Due to the appearance of the title after the release by Bonnie Tyler, the version of Kiss is actually the cover version of the song by Bonnie Tyler, although the main author of the song is a member of the band.

The southern rock band Molly Hatchet also recorded the song in 1989 for their album Lightning Strikes Twice .

“It's about life in New York and the things that happen to us all. We may not all get shot, but we find ourselves in similar situations when two people are connected in love and relationships. If you play with people's pride and hearts, all kinds of destructive things can happen. "

" Hide Your Heart and Heavens on Fire are my favorite songs that I wrote with Paul Stanley"

- Desmond Child in: David Leaf, Ken Sharp: Kiss: Behind the Mask

“It was a very strong song. The problem was that several other versions of the title were being released at exactly the same time, one by Ace Frehley, one by a woman named Robin Beck, and one by Molly Hatchet. That watered down the song a bit. "
