Eläkeläiset (Eng. The Pensioners ) is a Finnish Humppa band from Joensuu , founded in 1993 , which mostly plays cover versions of well-known pop and rock music .

history

Eläkeläiset was created in 1993 as a side project of some musicians of the band Kumikameli (German: Gummikamel ), originally planned for only a few appearances . After an appearance at the Provinssirock , two more concerts followed at festivals in Laituri and Kemijoki. After that, the project should actually be ended again. Nevertheless, Onni Waris, Petteri Terävä, Martti Waris and Tapio Santaharju recorded their first album Humppakäräjät at the request of Stupido Records in late June 1994 in improvised studios - according to their own statements, including a bus and a sauna . This was followed by first foreign appearances at two Swedish festivals in Gothenburg and Hultsfred . In the fall of 1994 the band also made some line-up changes: Petteri Terävä was replaced by Lassi Kinnunen and Tapio Santaharju by Kristian Voutilainen. In 1995 the band played over thirty concerts all over Finland and also has some appearances in Sweden again. The second album Humpan Kuninkaan Hovissa was released in July of that year .

In 1996 Kristian Voutilainen, who worked as a sound engineer for the band in between, returned as an active member of the band. Two tours through Germany with a total of 25 performances and a concert at the Danish Roskilde Festival took place. During the performances in Roskilde and Erlangen , the first live album In Humppa We Trust was created . In addition, the band signed a contract with the German label TUG-Records and the German agency Knock Out Music Service to distribute their music in Germany .

Despite major changes in the line-up, 1997 brought further tours through Germany, Austria and Sweden and in autumn the third studio album Humppamaratooni . In 1998 and 1999 the band's tour schedule was full. Among other things, she performed for the first time at the Wacken Open Air in the summer of 1999 . In addition, the musicians recorded another album in October 1998. In March 1999 this was launched under the name Commercial, Baby! released. It is the first Eläkeläiset album to make it into the Finnish album charts. A recently released split EP with Kumikameli entered the Finnish single charts at number 10 - also as a premiere.

In 2000 the band continued to tour actively, but the band composition was again subject to changes in many appearances. Sakari Liimatainen (actually Aku Syrjä from the band Eppu Normaali ) stepped in a few times . With the double album Humppa-Akatemia , a compilation was released that made it to number 17 in the Finnish album charts. In 2001 the band first appeared in Russia, whereupon a Russian label released the compilation Humppa! brought to market. Another studio album - The Speed of Sound - was recorded but never released due to a lack of permission from the original artists. In addition to the already traditional spring tour through Germany and Austria, Eläkeläiset released an album again in 2002 - Pahvische . In addition, the Christmas EP Joulutorttu was created .

In 2003 Eläkeläiset celebrated their ten-year band anniversary by playing a 25-hour Humppa marathon at Provinssirock, a festival that also celebrated its 25th anniversary and where the band made their first appearance in 1993. The band members received support from former members and session musicians, so that a total of 16 people took turns.

In 2004, in addition to another appearance at the Wacken Open Air and the Ruisrock , the first concert in Switzerland took place. Petteri Halonen, who previously often represented Onni Waris at live appearances, joined the band as the fifth permanent member. With Humppaelämää , the band also released a studio album, which for the first time only contained their own compositions due to the increasing problems with the owners of the songs requested for cover versions. In 2006, another album with cover versions followed, Humppasirkus . The band also released the EP Das Humppawerk , which contains songs sung in German. In 2007 the band took a break for the first time and did not give a single concert. Humpakonsertto , the live album released this year, had already appeared on several gigs during the previous year. In 2008 the band held 26 concerts according to their own information, including a free concert in Helsinki as part of the 160th anniversary of their hometown Joensuu. In addition, the band released the album Humppa United .

End of September 2009 was the band known with the signature beverage Hulluna humpasta the Euro Vision Song Contest 2010 to want to participate - - of them as "Humppavision Song Contest" means. The decision as to which Finnish entry will be at the start in Oslo was made on January 30, 2010 in the Finnish qualification for the Eurovision Song Contest , where Eläkeläiset could not prevail against Kuunkuiskaajat in the final of the top three .

In March 2014 the band played two concerts with the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra under the title Humpfonia .

In July 2014, drummer Kristian Voutilainen left the band. He will be replaced by Tapio Santaharju, who was a member of Eläkeläiset back in the 1990s.

style

Eläkeläiset mostly plays cover versions of well-known pop and rock music in the fast humppa - or slow jenkka style. The songs are often barely recognizable, but memorable melodies are usually adopted. The texts are mostly in Finnish and are made up of mostly disrespectful translations as well as their own, often nonsensical poetry. This approach met with resistance from the record companies of the original titles, which is why the band says they are no longer allowed to play or publish their versions of Wind of Change (by the Scorpions ) and Smells Like Teen Spirit (by Nirvana ). Finnish bands, on the other hand, accept cover versions of their songs almost without exception. The 2006 DVD Chaos Ridden Years - Stockholm Knockout Live by Children of Bodom contains, among other things, a cover version of Eläkeläiset's Vihaan humppaa performed by Alexi Laiho , which is a cover of Hate Me! from Children of Bodom is. Lauri Ylönen from The Rasmus, on the other hand, offered the song The Falling for a cover at a chance encounter .

Concerts

Eläkeläiset do not usually play in front of a large audience, but have already performed in front of tens of thousands of visitors at festivals such as Provinssirock, Ruisrock and Wacken Open Air. The band sometimes drives to their concerts in a private pickup truck. In previous years the band would occasionally hide alcoholic beverages along highways and in and around concert halls for fans and concert goers to search for.

The band's live line-up has often fluctuated. So there have already been several gigs where only one of the regular band members was present. Former drummer Kristian Voutilainen stated in an interview in 2013 that Eläkeläiset performed once at two concerts in Helsinki and the Netherlands in 1997.

In order to avoid missing permits for their cover versions, the band occasionally records their own concerts and publishes these recordings as bootlegs .

Fans

There are several groups of fans who are loyal to Eläkeläiset. At the end of the 1990s there was a fan club called “Die Pensionner-Jugend”, about whose whereabouts nothing is known. In 2004 the loosely networked "Humppajugend" was founded with various local groups around the world. The design and public appearance of the "Humppajugend" is based heavily on the " Turbojugend " of the Norwegian band Turbonegro . Fan groups not trading as “Humppajugend” also exist in Poland (“Polish Humppa Team”) and Finland (“Humpparetkut”).

"Geek" culture

While the first fans of Eläkeläiset were mostly to be found in the punk environment, computer geeks also discovered the music of the Finns for themselves in the 1990s. Eläkeläiset is now considered an integral part of each Hackathon and they say much of the OpenBSD - kernel code are under Humppa been written -Influence. Numerous inside jokes on the website of the OpenBSD project testify to this.
