Crazy Nights is the fourteenth studio album by hard rock band Kiss , released in 1987 .

History of origin

There were two years between the release of Asylum in 1985 and Crazy Nights - the longest break between two Kiss studio albums until then. Asylum sales had been good, the tour was relatively successful, but the band failed to make big profits. To fill the gap between releases, PolyGram released the band's first home video , Exposed , on May 18, 1987 , which contained some 1980s video clips that were linked as part of a loose background plot.

Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons decided that a "big" album was needed to rekindle interest in Kiss. They had produced both previous albums themselves and came to the conclusion that a well-known producer might be able to bring the band forward again. They chose Ron Nevison, who was known to have restarted the tarnished careers of other artists with his productions (1984 Survivors Vital Signs , 1985 Hearts Heart or 1986 Ozzy Osbournes The Ultimate Sin ).

The working title for the album was Who Dares ... Wins ; in Japan it was even advertised with this title shortly before publication. The production turned out to be very trendy, but the band again placed more emphasis on musical quality than on simply bringing a new product onto the market.

The band completed thirteen tracks for the album, but only eleven of them were used. One of the songs, Sword and Stone , written by Bruce Kulick , Paul Stanley and Desmond Child, was recorded in 1989 by the German group Bonfire and made available for the soundtrack to Wes Craven's film Shocker . The second unused title was Hide Your Heart , which Paul Stanley wrote with Desmond Child and Holly Knight . Hide Your Heart was re-recorded and released for the 1989 album Hot in the Shade . The song Thief in the Night, which Gene Simmons wrote with Mitch Weissman, was recorded by Wendy O. Williams for her album WOW in 1984.

Crazy Nights is the band's first completely digitally recorded album.

Cover

The album cover showed the band members' photos arranged in a circle on a broken mirror . The photos used for this were taken by the photographer Walter Wick, as well as the black and white group photo on the inner sleeve of the record. Similar to the album Rock and Roll Over , the band logo was positioned at the corners. On the back, the cover showed individual photos of the members taken by Mark Weiss and Glen La Ferman, each taking up a quarter of the record sleeve. In the middle was the Chikara symbol (力), which was used for the album Hotter Than Hell in 1974 and was placed between the titles on the A and B sides.

For the CD edition, the text page contained in the LP edition , which was on the back of the inner sleeve, was omitted . The CD only contained a four-sided insert sheet with the cover photo on the front, the group photo on the left and the Chikara symbol on the inside right and the individual photos on the back. In contrast to the LP edition, the group photo on the CD was colored.
