Kiss Unplugged is the live album of the US hard rock band Kiss , released in 1996 . It documents the first joint appearance of the group in their original line-up since 1979 and was also the starting signal for the comeback of masks and costumes as well as the band's extravagant stage shows.

History of origin

Classification in the musical background

After the band was led by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley after the departure of Peter Criss (1980) and Ace Frehley (1982) and the band's career was continued with changing musicians in the early 1980s, until a stable line-up with Eric Carr ( Drums) and Bruce Kulick (lead guitar), the band released albums from 1985 of varying quality and with less commercial success than in the past. In 1991 the group was working on the album Revenge when Eric Carr developed cancer and died in November of that year. He was replaced by Eric Singer , with whom Revenge was completed and the live album Alive III was recorded.

In 1995 the group took over the concept of the so-called "Kiss Conventions " developed by their fans and organized their own events in various Australian, Canadian and American cities, including original costumes from the 1970s and 1980s, instruments , designs for record covers and show Props were exhibited, cover bands played and, finally, Kiss performed, answered questions from fans and played songs on demand. A full tour of 32 conventions was organized, starting on February 3, 1995 in Perth, Australia and ending on August 1, 1995 in Pittsburgh . Tommy Thayer led the American part of the convention tour .

On June 17, 1995, Peter Criss also attended the Burbank, California convention after being invited by Gene Simmons to show his daughter Jenilee part of his own story. He was picked up in a limousine and sang the songs Hard Luck Woman and Nothin to Loose with Kiss , which he also sang when he was active with Kiss.

Since the show was first broadcast in 1989, MTV Unplugged had become a format that musicians were keen to participate in. Although MTV had never shown much interest in Kiss, Alex Coletti , producer and director at MTV, was keen to get the band to join Unplugged. He met up with Kiss' tour manager Tim Rozner, who gave him a tape that recorded the acoustic set for one of the conventions, and Coletti promoted MTV to get Kiss for Unplugged. When he got positive feedback, he met the band on July 22nd at the Kiss Convention in Detroit and presented his proposal.

From the beginning it was planned to let Peter Criss and Ace Frehley be part of the recordings; MTV took it for granted that the two original members would be there for the recording. But it didn't seem to be a problem for Stanley and Simmons if the co-founders of Kiss were part of the show - in the end it was clear that everyone involved - the band, Criss, Frehley and MTV - would benefit from it. Finally, both sides agreed on a contract that provided that Kiss in its then current line-up, reinforced by the guests Criss and Frehley, would become part of the unplugged story on August 9, 1995 at Sony Sound Studios in New York City . After the convention tour ended, the band members went to the SIR rehearsal studios with Frehley and Criss to prepare for the show.

recording

The recording of Kiss Unplugged found on 9 August 1995 in the Sony Sound Studios in New York City. The band first appeared in their then current line-up (Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer) and started Comin 'Home . This track had never been played live before 1995. Another unusual song for a Kiss show was Plaster Caster , which made it clear that Kiss would play obscure tracks too. Every Time I Look at You concluded the concert with the aforementioned line-up ; for this title an orchestra came on stage, which the band supported. Phil Ashley played the piano.

The stage was then rebuilt to make room for another drum kit and an additional bar stool. Meanwhile, the band entertained the studio audience with acoustic versions of Heaven's on Fire , Spit , C'mon and Love me, and a country version of God of Thunder , before Paul Stanley announced that Peter Criss and Ace Frehley would also perform.

For the first time since 1980, the group appeared in public with their original line-up, playing the Rolling Stones sung by Ace Frehley - cover 2,000 Man , then Peter sang Criss Beth before Kulick and Singer returned. Six of them played Nothin 'to Lose and Rock And Roll All Nite .

The recording was then edited by MTV, Kiss Unplugged first aired on October 31, 1995.

publication

MTV initially had concerns about releasing the album, despite Mercury Records offering to take over distribution. Danny Goldberg, who had recently risen to head PolyGram and worked as a creative consultant for Kiss in the early 1980s and had the masks removed in 1983, asked MTV a personal favor, and shortly afterwards the record company and MTV came to an agreement to a release in March 1996. Kiss Unplugged was released on CD and double LP; the LP also contained the title Got to Chose .

In the US, the album received gold status.
