Julia Lohmann

Julia Lohmann (* 1951 in Dorsten ) is a German painter and sculptor . She lives in Düsseldorf and Berlin. The focus of her work is on painting, objects, installations and works on paper and aluminum.

Life

Julia Lohmann studied from 1971 to 1978 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Joseph Beuys and Erwin Heerich . In 1982 she had her first solo exhibition in the Schmela Gallery , and in 1984 a support booth at Art Cologne . She constructed her pictures and image architectures made of steel or aluminum, paper and veiled nettle as processes understood from multiple perspectives, which she related to urban life.

In 1984 she founded the Paul Pozozza Museum together with Hilmar Boehle , Marcel Hardung and Robert Knuth , which was followed from 1995 to 2000 by the Pozzo Pozozza in Berlin-Kreuzberg with the “First Artist Devotional Shop” by Lohmann / Brunetti. From 1987 to 1989 she had a teaching position at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf. From 1989 to 1993 she worked in a Los Angeles studio with aircraft scrap from El Mirage. It was there, inspired by reading by Susan Buck-Morss , Walter Benjamin and Thomas Pynchon , among others , a series of works on the subject of origins, aluminum, war and flying.

From 1993 to 1995 she traveled to New Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Pakistan and Japan. During this time the intensive occupation began with the color yellow; then follow intercultural projects in collaboration with Reinhard Dinkelmeyer , Marcel Uecker-Hardung and Beral Madra (Abacus: weapons and everyday objects from near and far countries, trade routes, paper and porcelain, blue and white).

In 1995 the Academy of Fine Arts Tianjin invited her to a workshop; since then she has been traveling regularly in China. Since 2002 she has been visiting professor at the TAFA College of Contemporary Arts.

Julia Lohmann is a member of the German Association of Artists .
