Udo Remmes
Karl Maria Udo Remmes (born July 2, 1954 in Tübingen ; † November 25, 2014 ) was a German photographer and doctor. He became known for his new style of photography , especially backstage photography in the fields of opera , ballet and musicals . The idea behind Remmes' work wasn't documentation - he wanted to capture the moment when the hard work of actors, singers, and dancers turns into art.
Career
He initially studied biology and medicine , received his doctorate in neuroradiology from 1984 to 1986 and completed training as a specialist in diagnostic radiology. He then graduated in Professional Photography from the New York Institute of Photography. In 1995 Remmes was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine , in 2002 a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts , both based in London.
Photographic career
In 2000 the University and State Library in Düsseldorf became aware of his photographic work. The “Operaria” exhibition showed a portrait of the backstage operations of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein . This was followed by a series of recordings at various European opera and ballet stages such as the Teatro Regio Turin , the Graz Opera , the English National Opera London, the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland. In 2005 he took photos at the Chang'an Grand Theater in Beijing. In 2002 the Theatermuseum Düsseldorf bought 200 of his works and thus founded the "Remmes Collection". Also in 2002 he was named Accredited Senior Imaging Scientist & Fellow (ASIS FRPS) by the Royal Photographic Society . As part of the world exhibition EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, Remmes represented artistic photography from Düsseldorf with an exhibition on the interface between theater work and stage art in the Liu Haisu Art Museum Shanghai.
Photographic style
Remmes' photographic style is based on pictorialism . His intrinsic photography is contrary to the New Objectivity of the Düsseldorf Becher School. Udo Remmes brings the work of art theater, which disappears at the moment of its creation, close without violating the secret. Udo Remmes' photographs lead from the workshops through the cloakrooms and back stages to the ramp and in front of the curtain. They show the technical achievements and the efforts of all those involved when the theatrical work of art reaches the audience “over the ramp”. He is not interested in documentation. Udo Remmes captures moments in which theater work turns into theatrical art. He lets you take part in moments of concentration and immersion, but also of exhaustion and happiness, and shows theatrical art as the result of a designed creative process. As a viewer, he keeps his distance, and his sensitive look behind the scenes does not destroy the magic of the theater, but increases the enjoyment of it. The distant gaze of the photographer also captures the tense contradictions of a scene, as does the gaze of the theater lover who knows about the delicate balance between theater work and theatrical art. The pictures retell the story of the often familiar theater evenings, seduce you to take a closer look and allow a new approach to the secret of theater to be found.
