The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) is a British medical organization.

It was founded in 1805 as the Medical and Surgical Society of London . In 1834 it received a Royal Charter and was renamed the Royal Medical and Surgical Society of London . In 1907 the RSM emerged from this and seventeen specialty companies. The Royal Society of Medicine has been based on Wimpole Street, Westminster , London since 1910 . Its president is (as of 2015) Babulal Sethia .

activities

Doctors, dentists, veterinarians and scientists as well as students of medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine can become members. In 2013 the RSM had around 21,000 members. In addition, the RSM awards honorary memberships for outstanding achievements in medicine and related sciences. The total number of (living) honorary members (Honorary Fellows) is limited to 100. For example, Charles Darwin , Louis Pasteur , Edward Jenner and Sigmund Freud were honorary members of the society.

The organization organizes scientific symposia and training courses, as well as public information and discussion events, and it operates one of the largest medical libraries in the world - with around 600,000 volumes and 12,000 journals. It expressly does not create any medical guidelines .

The RSM awards a number of awards for medical students , for doctors in training to become specialists and for specialists and scientists. She is also editor of the scientific journals Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine (JRSM) (since 1809) and JRSM Open as an open access journal . RSM press publishes a number of monographs , mainly from the field of medical history .
