Double Platinum is a music album by the hard rock band Kiss . It was released on April 24, 1978.

Emergence

After Kiss released the live album Alive II , preparations began for other projects that would involve the members of the group. On the one hand, this was the television film "Kiss chased by phantoms", on the other hand, all four members of the group wanted to record solo albums that were to be released at the same time.

The group had released two albums a year since their debut album was released in 1974, and this rhythm should be kept wherever possible. That is why Casablanca boss Neil Bogart came up with the idea of releasing a best of album, and individual songs should be remixed in order to arouse the interest of fans in such a record .

Sean Delaney , who was in London to record Toby Beau's first album , was entrusted with the task. With the recordings for the album finished, he stayed in London and began sifting through the selected tracks for "Double Platinum" with engineer Mike Stone. It turned out that the material could not simply be strung together because of the vastly different sound quality of the tapes supplied , so that the original tapes had to be flown in from the USA .

The work took place in Trident Studios, London. In order to be able to publish a single , Neil Bogart had the title "Strutter" of Kiss' debut album adapted to the current disco trend at the time ; it was renamed "Strutter '78". The work turned out to be particularly difficult because the tracks produced by Bob Ezrin were very complex and you couldn't just cut something out without completely changing the sound of the song. The same was true for the recordings of Eddie Kramer : he had always recorded the drums in mono, so that no stereo effects could be added to the drum sound. Ezrin's recordings were made to measure the sound, and all remixes were based on them. With the exception of Do You Love Me , the titles used were all on the live albums Alive! and Alive II .

Cover and equipment

Double Platinum appeared in a silver, gleaming metallic flap cover. The titles were printed in black on the inside of the cover, the upper half of the inside showed reliefs of the four group members. In order to achieve the metallic effect, the printing paper of the cover was covered with a film made of the plastic Mylar , then the faces of the group members were punched into the cover. Some covers were incorrectly printed: They only showed the faces of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, but both on the left and right halves of the flip cover. The pictures used by the group members were drawn by Eraldo Carugati , who used almost identical pictures for the band members' solo albums, which were also released in 1978. On the back of the first edition of the album, there was a transparent adhesive strip printed in red with the title list and additional advertising for the album: "Brand-New Strutter '78 ... Brand New Mixes Of These Kiss Classics!" Was above the list to read, under it was pointed to the addition: "A Special 2-Record Set ... And Your Own Platinum Plaque From Kiss!"

As an addition, the first edition of the album contained a "platinum award" , which consisted of cardboard pasted with Mylar that could be hung on the wall. The “Award” had a silver border and showed a platinum record on a black background. In a box in the lower right corner were the words “This Platinum Award is presented to (you could insert your own name on a line) with Our Gratitude. Thank You for Helping to Make Kiss A Double Platinum Success. ” The album cover was shown in the lower left corner. An order form for various merchandise items was also included with the record ; on the back of the ticket, the group's official fan club, the “Kiss Army”, recruited members.
