Peter Criss is the solo album recorded and released in 1978 by the then Kiss drummer Peter Criss .

History of origin

Between 1974 and 1977, Kiss had released a new album on average every six months, and with Love Gun and Alive II they had reached the peak of their work to date. In 1976, the group had renewed their contract with Casablanca Records , and this provided that the record company could require each member of the group to release a solo album, with the release of two solo albums equal to the release of one Kiss album. So four solo albums meant that the group would have fulfilled two more studio commitments from their contract. The idea of recording solo albums at all came from manager Bill Aucoin and Casablanca boss Neil Bogart and was included in the contract at their request.

In June 1978 the four members of the group went to different studios to record their respective solo albums. This appointment was problematic for Peter Criss because he had lost control of the vehicle while under the influence of narcotics while taking a ride in a rented Porsche in Marina del Rey and crashed into a tree. He was catapulted out of the car through the windshield and sustained broken arms that required hospitalization. His co-driver, tour manager Fritz Postlethwaite, had to be taken to hospital with third-degree burns because he could not get out of the burning wreckage quickly enough. Criss' injuries had not yet completely healed when he started work on his album, so drummer Alan Schwartzberg was asked to support Criss, who nevertheless wanted to record as much as possible himself.

However, Criss did not have enough material for an album either: he had already made basic recordings for four songs at Electric Lady Studios in New York , but there was not enough for a full album. Stan Penridge reported that he still had material from the old "Lips" days that was not being used, and Criss saw it as a way of getting songs for his album quickly. He offered Penridge a 50% stake in the artist's income if the latter would let him have the songs, and Penridge agreed. Criss was listed as a co-author of the songs.

The recordings for Criss' album took place in June and July 1978 in various studios, including the Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angeles, additional recordings were made in the Sound Labs and The Burbank Studio. A release was planned for September. The album also included the title "Tossin 'and Turnin'", the cover version of a No. 1 hit by Bobby Lewis . The track was included in Kiss' live program for the 1979 Dynasty Tour.

Cover

All of the Kiss members' solo albums had a cover showing the masked face of the respective artist. The portraits had been drawn by Eraldo Carugati. Each portrait had its own background color: Peter Criss was highlighted in green, Gene Simmons in red, Ace Frehley in blue, and Paul Stanley in purple. Each album came with a poster that was shaped to match one of the other three posters, so that when all four albums were purchased, a large poster was created that showed all four members. In addition, each album was accompanied by an order form for merchandise items.

publication

The solo albums of all four Kiss members were released on September 18, 1978 in the United States , the circulation was 4 million albums, one million albums per member of the group. All four albums went gold and platinum on October 2, 1978, with Criss' album reaching number 43 on the Billboard 200 , and number 59 on Cashbox, where the album fell off the charts after just three weeks. For Casablanca Records, the release was the Albums a financial fiasco, because most fans simply couldn't afford to buy all four albums at once. Since Casablanca had offered retailers a “100% Return Policy”, what had happened to the label in 1975 was repeated: the number of returns was enormous.

Casablanca Records released the solo albums as Kiss albums, so members of the group are happy to use them for the total number of awards the band has won. In addition, the albums were all provided with the band's logo. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), on the other hand, does not recognize them as band albums, but lists them under the names of the respective artists, so that they are actually not counted towards the awards for Kiss.
