Out of Control is the first music album by drummer Peter Criss . It was released in 1980 after he split from hard rock band Kiss . It was the first album by a group member that was released regardless of group affiliation.

History of origin

Peter Criss had to leave Kiss, of which he was a founding member, in 1980 after developing a serious drug problem that soon resulted in his being unable to play the drums professionally. His last recording for Kiss was Dirty Livin ' , which was released on the 1979 album Dynasty . He was not involved in the recordings for the Kiss album Unmasked , which was released in May 1980, and was only listed as a member of the group in order to keep up appearances until a replacement was found. His successor, Eric Carr , joined Kiss on July 1.

Criss kept his stake in the Kiss business enterprise; Bill Aucoin , Kiss manager since the band was founded, continued to work for him.

While Kiss was looking for a successor to Peter Criss, he was in the studio working on his record . As with his first solo album , which he released as a member of Kiss in 1978, the majority of the recorded tracks came from him and his partner Stan Penridge . Only one title, You Better Run , came from outside writers.

Cover

The cover of the album shows a seemingly burning music box in the background , from which the records are explosively catapulted forward and fly uncontrollably into a group of people. The idea for this came from Peter Criss, the drawing was made by Todd Schorr . In the foreground on the left is a blonde woman who is Criss' wife at the time, Playboy - Playmate Debra Jensen.

publication

Out of Control was released in October 1980 and sold very poorly. Criss accused Kiss of influencing the marketing, which led to poor sales. However, if you look at the upheavals at the record company Casablanca Record & FilmWorks (founder Neil Bogart had sold his remaining shares in the company to PolyGram, the new owners tried to save what could be saved → main article: Casablanca Records ), the problems become clear almost by itself:

Penridge had completed a mix of the titles completed by then on May 9, 1980, which he and Criss liked and was clearly hard rock-oriented. Nevertheless, Jim Boyer was commissioned by the record company to do the sound mixing for the album, Penridge and Criss were not involved. The result was much softer. PolyGram viewed Out of Control and the next Criss album, Let Me Rock You, as a favor for a formerly successful band rather than an opportunity to make money from the popularity of Kiss and Criss.

The release rights for the album were with Kiss and Rock Steady Music, the music publisher Bill Aucoins; Criss' step into musical independence also showed strong references to his previous band: Howard Marks Advertising was responsible for the design, as with Kiss, Gene Simmons , Paul Stanley , Ace Frehley and his wife Jeanette and their daughter Monique also appear in the acknowledgments on. The album ends with the line you must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss sung by Criss from the song As Time Goes By .

By Myself was released as a single , but it did not reach the charts . The track You Better Run was recorded and published by Pat Benatar in 1982 .

Out of Control was released on CD in 1997 .
