Lelydorp ( Sranantongo : Kofidjompo , Kofi sprang) is the capital and a resort in the district of Wanica in the Republic of Suriname . history
The place was created at the beginning of the 20th century. It is named after Governor Cornelis Lely . The place was given the Sranan name Kofidjompo because the escaping slave Kofi (who was born on a Friday) narrowly escaped his pursuers by jumping over a stream. When a railway line, the Lawabahn from Paramaribo to Dam , was built between 1903 and 1912 to develop the gold fields on the upper reaches of Suriname , Kofidjompo became an important stop on the originally 173 km long route. In order to pay tribute to the builder of the railway, engineer and governor Lely, the place was renamed Lelydorp. The route Paramaribo to Lelydorp was already in the 1950s and 1960s u. a. closed due to the expansion of the road network to Johan Adolf Pengel Airport .

Police posts , fire brigade , clinics, schools and sports complexes. In 1983 a square in the center of the village was given the name Kofidjompo so that the old name is not forgotten .
