Galibi is a Caribbean ( Kali'na ) village community and a resort with 741 inhabitants (Census 2012), which is administratively divided into Christiaankondre and Langamankondre . In addition, Galibi is the name for a nature reserve in the extreme northeast of Suriname , at the mouth of the Marowijne River in the Atlantic Ocean , on the border with French Guiana , in the Marowijne district .
history
From 1913 to 1957 a coconut plantation was operated by the Dutch West Indian Coconut Company near the village of Galibi on an area of around 500 hectares .
To protect sea turtles , the sandy beaches of Galibi, Babunsanti and Eilanti were placed under nature protection with an area of around 4,000 hectares along the coast . In the period from February to July put here leatherbacks ( Aitkanti ), olive ridley turtles ( Warana ), green turtles ( Krape ) and hawksbill turtles their eggs. A nature reserve was set up on Babunsanti.
Especially because of the sea turtles, Galibi is visited by numerous tourists during the egg-laying time. The tourist activities are also organized by the Caribbean community itself, which is supported by UNESCO .
Conflict over the displacement of the indigenous people
There was a lot of criticism from the indigenous peoples about the way the nature reserve was set up . At first they were forced to leave their ancestral area because the Surinamese forest authority claimed the reserve for itself. But in the course of the civil war 1986-1992 they occupied the territory again in 1989 and were able to negotiate permission to continue living there in the following years.
