history

The small town was founded at the beginning of the 20th century after the Surinaamsche Bauxiet Maatschappij , the later Suriname Aluminum Company (Suralco), subsidiaries of the Aluminum Company of America ( Alcoa ), discovered bauxite in the area and received a concession to mine bauxite in 1919 would have.

Initially, Moengo was only accessible by water. In order to enable bauxite earth to be transported to the United States , the Cottica was made navigable for seagoing vessels and a port facility with a reversible basin was built in Moengo. During the Second World War , the transports were given military escort by American soldiers. The raw material was of particular importance for aircraft construction in the USA at this time.

Moengo has had a landing strip since 1955 (code: MOJ), and from 1964 the place can be reached by land from Paramaribo , which also opens up the border town of Albina as a so-called east-west connection . With the construction of the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge (2000), the first bridge over Suriname in the capital, travel to and from Eastern Suriname was made considerably easier for a large part of the population.

During the civil war from 1986 to 1992 Moengo was in the combat zone between the military , until 1991 under the commander Desi Bouterse , and the so-called "jungle command " of Ronnie Brunswijk . During this time, the bauxite mining was stopped.

The bauxite deposits have been exhausted for several years and the open pit has been relocated to the Coermotibo mines. The ore was from here with thrust associations via the Cottica and Commewijne according Paranam transported on Surinam and there in the alumina plant to the intermediate alumina (Al 2 O 3 processed / alumina).

Since 2015, bauxite has not been mined or processed in Suriname.
