Humphrey Mijnals (born December 21, 1930 in Moengo ; † July 27, 2019 in Utrecht ) was a football player who played as a defender for both the Surinamese and the Dutch national teams.

Career

societies

Mijnals was in the period from 1953 to 1956 four times national champion with the Surinamese football club SV Robinhood . Brazil was the first professional international station in 1955. Here he played for América FC (PE) in Recife for six months . After returning to Suriname, he went to the Netherlands in 1956.

In the Netherlands he played as a contract footballer in the Eredivisie, founded in the same year, for the club USV Elinkwijk in Utrecht . He then moved to the Utrecht club VV DOS and he ended his football career in 1966 at SC 't Gooi in Hilversum .

National team

In the Oranje team Mijnals made his debut as the first dark-skinned on April 3, 1960 in a friendly match against the national team of Bulgaria, which was won 4-2 in Amsterdam . Mijnals hit the headlines when he cleared a Bulgarian shot on goal with an overhead kick . In the same game year he completed two more appearances as a national player . For the national team of Suriname, he played 45 internationals ; however, it is unclear how many of these games qualify as official internationals.

Awards

In 1999 Mijnals was voted the best Surinamese soccer player of the 20th century in the Netherlands. On August 24, 2008, he received the sports pfennig from the municipality of Utrecht for his special services .

The Surinamese Football Association honored him in 2011 with the publication of a book about his impressive career as a footballer.
