Suralco aluminum smelter in Paranam, December 2008 |
Paranam is a place in the Republic of Suriname , in the Para district , on the left bank of Suriname . In 1977 it had around 1,800 inhabitants.
founding
Paranam was founded in the late 1930s as a mining village by the Suriname Aluminum Company (Suralco) on former plantation areas . In the 1960s an alumina factory and an aluminum smelter were built here and the mining village became a factory town with the largest industrial complex in Suriname.
The electrical energy is transported from the hydropower plant ( Brokopondo reservoir ) in Afobaka to Paranam via a 70 km long high-voltage line on aluminum masts, where it is supplemented with energy from a turbine center.
The place has factory housing, retail stores, sports facilities (including swimming pools) and a medical service.
Aluminum smelter
Suralco's parent company, Alcoa Corporation, ended its bauxite production in Suriname in 2017 and closed the complex in Paranam.
