Machel Montano
Machel Montano (born November 24, 1974 in Carenage ) is a Trinidadian singer, producer and songwriter of soca and calypso music.
Career
Montano was promoted and produced by his parents as a child. In 1984, together with his older brother and a few neighbors, he was a founding member of the Socaband Panasonic Express, which was renamed Xtatik in 1989 and still exists today with Montano's involvement. Montano recorded his first solo album in 1985 at the age of eleven. In 1986, when he was twelve, he appeared on the US TV show Star Search . In 1987 he became the youngest participant of all time to win the Caribbean Song Festival , the Caribbean equivalent of the Eurovision Song Contest . In the early 2000s, Montano co-hosted the radio show "International Sounds of Soca" on BBC Radio 1Xtra for four years . The show band with which Montano performs live these days is called "The HD Family", where "HD" stands for "High Definition".
As a songwriter and singer, Montano, in contrast to most other Soca artists, regularly collaborates with other musicians from the fields of calypso and reggae, such as Beenie Man , Buju Banton and Mighty Sparrow, for individual songs .
Soca and calypso music are competitive; In the Caribbean carnival season in particular, the artists compete against each other with their songs written for these occasions in a good dozen national and international competitions, some of which are decided by jurors and some by public votes, the most important of which are the International Soca Awards and the International Soca Monarch.
