Captain Morgan
Captain Morgan is a rum brand produced by Diageo . The rum brand is named after the Welsh privateer Henry Morgan . The main purchasing markets are the United States , Canada , the United Kingdom , Germany and South Africa . Captain Morgan is mainly sold as a "spirit based on rum", which is due to the fact that the alcohol content is below 35%, aromas are added and thus z. B. the Captain Morgan Spiced Gold is not a real rum, but rather is to be regarded as a trendy drink.
history
In 1944 Seagram began producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company.
Seagram CEO Samuel Bronfman bought a distillery called Long Pond from the Jamaican government. Among the buyers of the Long Pond distillery's raw rum was a Kingston pharmacy called Levy Brothers. The Levy family bought raw rum to add herbs and spices, and to mature and bottle the rum. Bronfman liked this finished rum so much that he acquired the distribution rights.
In the 1950s, sold Seagram's distillery to the Serralles Group , which also Don Q produces. The Captain Morgan brand was sold to Diageo .
In 2004, Captain Morgan was one of the best-selling rums in the world with around 54 million liters. In 2005 the production of the Overproof 73% Vol Black Label was discontinued. It was used as a high percentage ingredient for shooters like the B52 . In 2010, Captain Morgan was widely advertised on television in Germany with the slogan “Got a little Captain in you?”.
