Samuel Bronfman
Samuel Bronfman , CC ( Sam Bronfman ; born February 27, 1891 in Soroca , Moldova , † July 10, 1971 in Montreal ) was a Canadian entrepreneur (founder of Seagram , the world's largest liquor manufacturer) and from 1939 to 1962 President of the Canadian Jewish Congress .
Life
In 1924 he founded the Distillers Corporation Ltd. in Montreal and benefited in the 1920s from prohibition in the USA , which helped his company to grow strongly in Canada, where the legal restrictions did not apply. His business partners included, among others, Al Capone in Chicago and Arnold Rothstein in New York , who bought huge batches from Bronfman and illegally distributed the substance to the people.
In 1928 Bronfman had bought the small distillery Joseph E. Seagram & Sons and the naming rights from the Seagrams heirs. The company flourished and brought the Bronfman family a fortune that grew practically regardless of the economic situation. Prohibition was lifted in 1933 and the sometimes inferior fusel was replaced by top quality whiskey .
Until his death in 1971, Samuel Bronfman ran the company, which was then taken over by his son Edgar Bronfman sen. was taken over and diversified into other industries (entertainment and media) .
Awards
In 1967 he was awarded the highest Canadian honor for civilians ( Companions of the Order of Canada ).
family
Samuel Bronfman was one of eight children of Mindel and Ekiel Bronfman who immigrated to Canada from Bessarabia .
On June 21, 1922, he married Saidye Rosner (1897-1995). The marriage had four children: Aileen Mindel "Minda" Bronfman de Gunzburg (1925–1986), Phyllis Lambert (born January 14, 1927), Edgar Miles Bronfman (1929–2013) and Charles Rosner Bronfman (born June 27, 1931 ).
