Carlos Barretto

Carlos Barretto (born July 18, 1957 in Estoril as Carlos António Barreto de Andrade Amaro ) is a Portuguese musician ( double bass , composition ) of creative jazz who is also active as a visual artist.

Live and act

Barretto began learning the piano and guitar at the age of eight. He later switched to the double bass. Since 1979 he studied double bass and piano at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa and played in local clubs during this time. In 1982 he continued his studies in Vienna at the University of Music and Performing Arts with Ludwig Streicher and gained experience working with Fritz Pauer , Joris Dudli and Christian Radovan . In 1984 he settled in Paris, where he accompanied Steve Grossman , Steve Lacy , Steve Potts , Barry Altschul , Aldo Romano , Hal Singer and Alain Jean-Marie . He also appeared at festivals with Horace Parlan , Tony Scott , Lee Konitz , Glenn Ferris , Siegfried Kessler and John Betsch .

In 1993 he returned to Portugal, where he performed with his international quintet ( Impressões , 1994). In the 1990s he also accompanied Art Farmer , Brad Mehldau , Kirk Lightsey , Don Moye , Gary Bartz and Joe Chambers . Then the trio formed Lokomotiv with the guitarist Mário Delgado and the drummer José Salgueiro, which recorded Suite da Terra (1998) and other albums, some of which were expanded by other musicians such as Louis Sclavis or François Corneloup . He also belonged to the groups of Afonso Pais, Carlos Martins and Bernardo Sassetti , with whom he recorded three albums. He can also be heard on recordings by Mal Waldron , George Cables , Bob Sands, Ethan Winogrand, Mário Delgado, Afonso Pais and Carlos Martins. After Tom Lord he is involved in 17 recordings between 1989 and 2010.
