Dave Doran

Dave Doran (* 10. November 1957 in Laughlinstown in Dublin ) is a Swiss merger - and jazz - drummer of Irish origin.

Live and act

Doran comes from a musical family; his siblings are jazz musicians Christy and Brigeen Doran . At the age of sixteen, he performed at the Open Air Festival in Augst , where he won a scholarship for the Swiss Jazz School . The group Kiol , in which he played with his sister, Heinz Affolter , Raoul Walton and Fernando Saunders, also aroused international attention, led to appearances at the Berlin Jazz Days and the Belgrade Festival (1982) and in 1983 to the opening act for Billy Cobhams Glass menagerie . At the same time there is a collaboration in a duo with brother Christy Doran. This is followed by studies at the New York Drummers Collectiv School with Alex Acuña and Lenny White . In the following years he played in trios with Jasper van't Hof , Peter Ponger and Christy Doran, but also influenced by the “May 84 Project” with Dom Um Romão , Norma Winstone , Rosko Gee, Urs Leimgruber , Trilok Gurtu and Christy Doran and an appearance at the Willisau Jazz Festival . In the next few years he took part in the dance project Trommeltanz (1985) and at the Lucerne City Theater in the performances of Die Bachantinnen .

With the group Doran, Cook & Miller , to which Mark Koch and Fredy Müller belonged in addition to his sister Brigeen, Doran toured the former GDR in 1986. In 1987 the Doran Band was formed , to which the siblings Brigeen, Christy, Dave Doren and bassist Fredy Müller belonged; this formation, which was awarded the work grant by the city and canton of Lucerne in 1988 , played in the USA, where they also performed in the Knitting Factory in New York. In 1993 he wrote film scores (for delicacies of Swiss Television DRS ). He toured Europe several times with his group Jazzrap and performed at the Tallinn International Jazz Festival in 1995. In 1997 he toured Switzerland and Germany with Rhythm Voice (Roland Philipp, Mamadu Mbaye, Bruno Amstad and Gianni Lüscher). With the recording of Rhythm Voice feat. Mr. Defunkt Joseph Bowie received excellent reviews (for Michael Möhring ( Jazzthetik ) this was one of the best records of 1998). In the next few years Kelvyn Bell and Jean-Paul Bourelly also belong to Rhythm Voice.

Doran also produced drum & bass tracks and started a solo drum project. He also formed the acoustic special edition with Heiri Känzig , Christoph Stiefel and Dave Feusi. With his brother Christy he pursued the XL Target project . He also played with musicians such as Bobby Burri , Glenn Ferris , Vinny Golia , Olivier Magnenat and was involved in albums by Brigeen Doran, Yvonne Moore, Byron D. Hopson and Funkology .
