Wädi Gysi (born February 14, 1959 as Walter Gysi in Chur , Graubünden , Switzerland ) is a Swiss musician (guitarist, singer) and former ice hockey player .

Career

Gysi, who grew up in Arosa , has played professional ice hockey as a defender of EHC Arosa since 1978 . He then moved from the national league A to the first division to play for Adelboden and enrolled at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern . At first Gysi was primarily active in the jazz sector, including from 1985 with the groups Nuage Du Courage (including Mich Gerber and Marc Jundt) and from 1987 with the Blauer Hirsch ( grooving , punk-oriented free jazz with Gerber, Werner Lüdi and Mani Neumeier ). Gysi also brought elements from improvisation and avant-garde music and also played with improvisation musicians such as John Zorn , Chris Cutler , Fred Frith and Hans Reichel . He presented his music on tours in Japan, Russia and Brazil. By the early 90s, Gysi's style had developed into a mixture of punk vehemence and free jazz shaggy, which, however, always included melodic sounds.

In 1993 Gysi broke new ground and founded the group The (ec) Nudes , later called Pale Nudes , together with the English drummer Chris Cutler and the American singer and multi-instrumentalist Amy Denio , and toured the world with this group. In the following years he released on his own label "Blue Tiger Records" (RecRec) under the band name Tonight & Only together with his musical partner Michael Morris 2007 already the third album called Picking up the Pieces produced by Büne Huber, the front man of Patent Ochsner .

In addition, Gysi wrote various commissioned music, including the music for the successful piece "Sinnlos Stier" by the Panoptikum Pazzo theater group, directed by Peter Freiburghaus. For the music for the documentary On Foot to Santiago de Compostela by Bruno Moll he received the "Berner Filmmusikpreis" 2007. In 2009 he wrote the music for the award-winning documentary Pizza Bethlehem by Bruno Moll. He also works as a producer for other groups, including Les Reines Prochaines , Aeschbacher X Haegler, Regula Gerber , Paul E. Otth and the Rolf Gubler Band.
