Chadron is a city and the county seat of Dawes County in the US state of Nebraska .

history

The city is named after the French Louis B. Chartran, who ran a fur trading post in the region as early as 1841. After a slight approximation, his name became Chadron . 1884 was the actual founding date of the city when the Fremont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad reached the region from the west. At that time the population was already 500, because the " homesteader " Fannie O'Linn has built a community on the site. She had tried to foresee the point when the railroads to Wyoming and South Dakota would part in order to secure a future for the city. She therefore chose the place where the "White River" and the "Chadron Creek" unite. The tracks separate about 8 km west of the city. The population initially rose to over 2,000. However, u. a. the drought period in the 1890s led to a sharp decline as the grain harvest was no longer productive. Only the establishment of the new state normal school (today: Chadron State College ) secured the future of the city. The population was also subject to strong fluctuations over the next few decades, as the economic crisis in the 1930s led to renewed emigration.
