Education

After Matura in Zurich Regula Gerber graduated in 1976 to study at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart . She completed it with the state diploma . She also worked as a pianist and tutor at the opera school of this academic educational institution . A second degree in German , philosophy and literary studies followed in Berlin and Stuttgart .

career path

Gerber worked as an editor , author and presenter in radio and television , including at Süddeutscher Rundfunk . However, working at theaters is her main focus.

After her first studies she worked as an actress and was engaged at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and the Theater am Neumarkt Zurich . In 1984, together with Alexander Seer, she founded the Die Rampe theater (today: Theater Rampe ) in Stuttgart , a house that she expanded to become one of the largest private theaters in Baden-Württemberg after moving to the old cogwheel station , and which she in particular with first and World premieres and interdisciplinary projects "helped to achieve considerable renown".

In 1998 she succeeded Heiner Bruns as artistic director of the Bielefeld Theater . Regula Gerber supplemented the profile of the Dreispartenhaus in particular with performances of works by young German authors and contemporary composers , including Carola Bauckholt , Luigi Dallapiccola , Michael Hirsch Daniel Ott , Volker David Kirchner , Roman Haubenstock-Ramati and Frederic Rzewski .

The Nationaltheater Mannheim appointed her as general director for the 2005/2006 season , two years before her contract in Bielefeld expired. She replaced Ulrich Schwab there. Her contract was extended in 2011 to the end of the 2015/2016 season. Among other things, it ensured successful opera productions in Mannheim and, thanks to program design and implementation, achieved increasing audiences across all disciplines despite economically difficult times.

Regula Gerber established the Junge Oper as general director in the 2006/2007 season . Schnawwl , the children's and youth theater of the National Theater Mannheim, which has been present since 1979, thus received a counterpart in the field of music theater for children and young people. Schnawwl also expanded its offer for small and elementary school children, as well as for children with a migration background. In 2007, together with the then opera director Klaus-Peter Kehr, she founded the Mannheim Mozart Summer , a biennial music festival in the National Theater and Schwetzingen Palace . In 2009 she brought the conductor Dan Ettinger to Mannheim as general music director ; he was the musical director of the house until 2016. During the time of her artistic director, the decision was made to re-stage Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen at the Mannheim National Theater, directed by Achim Freyer .

Due to a long-term illness, Regula Gerber informed the City of Mannheim of her resignation in May 2012; the termination of the directorship contract was agreed at the end of the 2012/2013 season. In the following years she worked in the direction.
