Iro Helena Maaria Haarla (born November 7, 1956 in Tampere ) is a Finnish jazz musician (piano, harp , koto , accordion , keyboards and composition ).

Live and act

Haarla is the widow of the drummer and band leader Edward Vesala, who died in 1999 . She studied classical piano, composition and improvisation at the Sibelius Academy . There she met Vesala in 1978 and put her own career as a concert pianist on hold in favor of that of her partner; she worked on his album Lumi , arranged for him and was involved in some of Vesala's compositions. A duo project with Vesala's saxophonist Pepa Päivinen ( Yara Yara , 2001) was inspired by him. In 1999 she founded a trio with the bassist Ulf Krokfors and the saxophonist Rasmus Korsström ; as a result, the album Heart of a Bird was released in 2003 on the TUM label . With Krokfors she then formed the improvisation ensemble Loco Motife , whose album Penguin Beguine was released in 2005. In 2004 she recorded the album Northbound in Oslo for the label ECM , on which Krokfors, the trumpeter Mathias Eick , the saxophonist Trygve Seim and the drummer Jon Christensen participated. She also recorded with the UMO Jazz Orchestra ( The Sky Is Ruby ). In 2009 Iro Haarla went on a North American tour with her new quintet, which includes Verneri Pohjola (trumpet), Kari “Sonny” Heinla (saxophone), Reino Laine (drums) and again bassist Ulf Krokfors. She has won Finnish music prizes such as the Jazz Emma and the Georgie Award from the Finnish Jazz Federation.
