Kate Williams (* in London ) is a British jazz pianist , arranger and composer .

Live and act

Williams comes from a musical family; her father is the guitarist John Williams , her mother Lindy is a classical pianist. In 1999 she founded her own combo , with which she presented five albums that received good critical acclaim. Her trio CD Scenes and Dreams was ranked among the ten best albums of 2005 by Mojo magazine . She toured internationally with her quintet, some of which included Stan Sulzmann and flautist Gareth Lockrane ; Bobby Wellins played in her quartet at times , with whom she also recorded the duo album Smoke and Mirrors in 2011 . Appearances with her at the Pizza Express Steinway 2-Piano Festival 2010 and 2011 (with Robin Aspland and Nikki Iles ) were broadcast on the radio. Atlas & Vulcana (2014) was composed as a septet. She combined her trio with a string quartet for the album Four Plus Three (2016).

She is also a member of Chris Biscoe's Mingus Moves . She has also recorded with the group Nostalgia 77 and the singers Georgia Mancio (for whom she also composed and arranged) and Juliet Kelly . She has also performed with John Etheridge , Anita Wardell , Tim Whitehead , Julian Siegel and Tony Woods. She also taught at Richmond College.

Prizes and awards

Williams received the John Dankworth Award for Talent Deserving Wider Recognition in 2000 . Her septet, with which she recorded the album Made Up , was nominated for best ensemble for the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in 2012 ; Her septet album Finding Home with Georgia Mancio was awarded this prize as the best jazz album of the year in 2020.
