Ken Stubbs (born March 29, 1961 in Liverpool ) is a British jazz musician ( alto saxophone , composition ).

Live and act

Stubbs studied saxophone, composition and conducting at Salford College between 1978 and 1980 under the direction of Goff Richards and Roy Newsome.

In 1984 Stubbs founded the band First House together with Django Bates on piano, Mick Hutton on bass and Martin France on drums , which released a first album on ECM Records in 1985 ( Cantilena followed in 1989 ). During his time in London, Stubbs also played with Mike Walker , Jeremy Stacey, Peter Erskine , Kenny Wheeler , John Taylor , the Orlando le Fleming ensemble , the Michael Gibbs Orchestra and Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath .

He was a member of the British jazz ensemble Loose Tubes and has recorded three live albums with the formation, which were recorded in 1990 at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and released in 2010, 2012 and 2015. In 1999 he recorded a quartet album , Ballads , with Paul Edmonds , Mick Hutton , Gary Husband and Phil Robson , which was released in 2000. The following year he emigrated to Australia. There he worked as a saxophone teacher at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and as a saxophone teacher and big band leader at Southern Cross University , Lismore and the Northern Rivers Conservatorium Arts Center . There he played and recorded with jazz and improvisation musicians such as Paul Grabowsky , Simon Barker, Steve Newcomb, Brett Hirst, Matt McMahon, Scott Tinkler, John Morrison and John Hoffman.

In 2004, Stubbs was one of 60 composers invited to create their own music bar for Django Bates' Premature Celebration , written for Evan Parker and the London Sinfonietta to celebrate Parker's 60th birthday. It was performed at the FuseLeeds Festival and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
