Michael Connarty (born September 3, 1947 in Coatbridge ) is a Scottish politician .

Life

Connarty was born in Coatbridge in 1947. He attended the University of Stirling , which he left in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He then moved to Jordanhill Educational College and graduated in 1975 with a higher education diploma. Until he was elected to the British House of Commons , he taught economics. Connarty is married, father of two and grandfather of three.

Political career

For the first time Connarty went to the general election in 1983 for elections at the national level. He ran for the Labor Party for the Stirling constituency mandate , but was defeated by the Conservative Michael Forsyth . Despite winning votes, he missed entry into the House of Commons in the 1987 general election against Forsyth.

At the general election in 1992 Connarty candidate in the constituency of Falkirk East . In doing so, he inherited his party colleague Harry Ewing , who no longer ran for these elections. Despite losing votes compared to Ewing's previous result, Connarty held the mandate for the Labor Party and moved into the British House of Commons for the first time.

In the subsequent elections in 1997 , he increased his share of the vote to 56.1% and thus kept his mandate safe. Following the elections, Connarty took the position of Parliamentary Private Secretary under Junior Secretary of Tourism and Film, Thomas Clarke , and held it until 1998. In the 2001 election , Connarty defended his mandate for Falkirk East before the constituency ended was dissolved.

For the general election in 2005 Connarty ran in the newly created constituency Linlithgow and East Falkirk , in which parts of his former constituency had been absorbed. He received 47.7% of the vote and thus retained a seat in parliament. After Connarty was able to defend his mandate for Linlithgow and East Falkirk in the 2010 elections , he resigned from the House of Commons after the SNP had gained massive votes in the 2015 general election . The mandate went to the SNP candidate Martyn Day .
