Corey Mwamba

Corey Mwamba (born November 2, 1976 in Derby ) is a British jazz musician ( vibraphone , also Dulcimer , electronics).

Mwamba first learned keyboard at the age of eleven and sang in a children's choir in Derby. He got into jazz through the music of Jessica Williams on the radio. He attended college in Southampton and played drums in the college jazz band. He then studied chemistry at Birmingham University ; at the University of Derby he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and music.

Mwamba had his own radio show at the age of 25. During his career he worked a. a. with John Surman , Evan Parker , Orphy Robinson , Arun Ghosh , Andy Hamilton and the Blue Notes, the Derby Concert Orchestra, Tony Kofi and with the formations Gary Crosby 's NuTroop, The Master Drummers of Africa and Tomorrow's Warriors , as well as with their own formations (in a trio with Joshua Blackmore and Dave Kane as well as in a duo with Walt Shaw, with Rachel Musson and with Robert Mitchell). In 2007 Mwamba was commissioned to write and perform compositions for the 25th Derby Jazz Festival ( Argentum ). In 2008 he was nominated for the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation . In the field of jazz he was involved in 13 recording sessions after Tom Lord between 2008 and 2019, with Arun Ghosh, Gavin Barras and Nat Birchall , as well as with Will Hollands Quantic and Lloyd Miller / The Heliocentrics .

Mwamba is also presenter for the Freeness program on BBC Radio 3 ; this was awarded the media prize of the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in 2020 .
