Tony Kofi

Tony Kofi (* 1966 in Nottingham ) is a British jazz musician ( alto , baritone and soprano saxophone , flute ).

Live and act

Kofi grew up as the son of Ghanaian migrants in England and learned the saxophone as an autodidact . From 1988 to 1990 he studied at the Berklee College of Music . In 1991 he returned to Great Britain, where he first played with the Jazz Warriors and Gary Crosby 's Nu-troup. He has also appeared with Julian Argüelles , Claude Deppa , Billy Higgins , Andrew Hill , Courtney Pine , Tim Richards and Us3 . Then he led band projects together with Byron Wallen . In the Monk Liberation Band , he dedicated himself to the legacy of Thelonious Monk . His regular quartet, occasionally joined by Orphy Robinson , includes pianist Jonathan Gee , bassist Ben Hazleton and drummer Winston Clifford . He also led the ten-member Afro Jazz Family and was part of Lucky Ranku's African All Stars . His album Monk: All Is Know was nominated in 2005 for the BBC Jazz Awards as "Jazz Album of the Year".
