Jonathan Gee (born March 6, 1959 in Jaffa ) is an Israeli jazz pianist and singer who lives in Great Britain.

Live and act

Gee learned classical piano from the age of five; as a teenager he played rock music . During his studies at the University of Sheffield he turned to jazz. After completing his first degree, he enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music , but quit this training after a week to play with Bobby Wellins , Iain Ballamy , Eddie Parker , Dylan Fowler's Frevo and Dick Heckstall-Smith . In 1991 he was introduced by The Wire as "Most Promising Newcomer".

Jonathan Gee has recorded seven albums under his own name so far, including three trio albums and his solo album ( Wishbone ) with songs by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn . Gee works with his Jonathan Gee Trio with bassist Steve Rose and drummer Winston Clifford , which has existed since 1995; Gee performed regularly with him at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London , where he accompanied Joe Lovano and Benny Golson . Since 2003, Gee has also been playing in a trio with two Italian musicians, bassist Danilo Gallo and drummer Alessandro Minetto , who first appeared at the Apennine Jazz Festival . In 2004 the album Cream of Mandarins was released on the Artesuono label. Jonathan Gee also worked with the Finnish trumpeter Mika Mylläri , with whom he performed at the Pori Jazz Festival . In addition, Gee founded a fusion formation with Sylvan Richardson Jr. and Richard Spaven , which is dedicated to the classic fusion music of Herbie Hancock , Jaco Pastorius and Stevie Wonder ; with her Gee appears regularly at Club Matt & Phreds in Manchester .

Gee co-founded the Monk Liberation Front with Tony Kofi , Ben Hazleton and Winston Clifford , which is dedicated to the work of the pianist and composer Thelonious Monk . The band performed at the London Jazz Festival and performed Monk's work in day-long sessions. Jonathan Gee also played in Tony Kofi's quartet on his 2005 Monk tribute album All Is Know and in The Silent Truth .

Jonathan Gee has also worked with British musicians Damon Brown , Steve Williamson , Courtney Pine , Tim Whitehead and Christine Tobin , the UK-based American Ed Jones , and in the United States with David Murray , Art Farmer , Mark Murphy , Harry Allen , James Spaulding , Sonny Fortune and Ted Curson . He is also involved in albums by Alison Bentley , Claire Martin , Us3 and Orphy Robinson .
