Giancarlo Schiaffini

Giancarlo Schiaffini (* 1942 in Rome ) is an Italian trombonist and composer of modern creative jazz and new music . He has been one of the leading avant-garde musicians in Italy since the 1970s.

Live and act

Schiaffini studied physics (university degree). As an autodidact , he first played in Mario Schiano's Gruppo Romano Free Jazz . In 1970 he studied at the Darmstadt Summer Courses with Karlheinz Stockhausen , György Ligeti and Vinko Globokar and founded the experimental chamber music group Nuove Forme Sonore , but in 1975 also the Gruppo Romano di Ottoni , whose repertoire included contemporary music as well as Renaissance music. He also studied electronic music with Franco Evangelisti and performed (until 1983) with Nuova Consonanza in the field of new improvisation music . He also performed solo compositions by Luciano Berio and Giacinto Scelsi and worked closely with Luigi Nono .

He became known in the jazz scene in the 1980s and 1990s through his participation in the bands of Claudio Fasoli ( Hinterland , 1979), and the Italian version of Misha Mengelberg's ICP Orchestra . His duets with jazz singer Tiziana Ghiglioni ( Well Actually , 1987) also caused a stir . He has been a member of the Italian Unabile Orchestra since its inception and was involved in the production of the album Skies of Europe , which was released on the ECM label in 1994 , and the Enja album Litania Sibilanti . He also played in the bands of Gianluigi Trovesi ( Roccellana , 1985), Umberto Petrin ( Wirrwarr , 1992), Dino Betti van der Noot and took part in Giorgio Gaslini's big band production Masks (1990/91) . In 1991 he played again with Mario Schiano on his album Uncaged . In addition, Schiaffini has worked with many international and Italian musicians, such as Cecil Taylor , Tristan Honsinger , Giacomo Aula , Lucilla Galeazzi and Massimo Urbani .

Schiaffini, who works as a music teacher at a conservatory, has written a textbook on contemporary instrumental techniques on the trombone. In 2000 he was composer in residence at the International Composers & Improvisers Forum in Munich .
