Umberto Petrin (born May 15, 1960 in Casteggio ) is an Italian pianist and composer of modern jazz . He also worked as a poet and painter .

Live and act

Umberto Petrin studied piano from the age of twelve. From the age of 18 he turned successfully to poetry (several prizes, publication of a selection volume "Perimetri", 1985). Because of his acquaintance with Walter Lazzaro , he also turned to painting between 1980 and 1990 and took part in exhibitions. Since 1984 he occasionally played jazz with his own trio, which he intensified from 1986; he founded a quartet and worked occasionally in the RAI - big band with. In 1987 he made his own record; since 1989 he has accompanied Tiziana Ghiglioni . Then he formed a duo with Guido Mazzon , with whom he also accompanied the poet Luigi Pasotelli .

He was best known outside Italy for his membership in the Italian Unabile Orchestra (where he also worked with Cecil Taylor ). He has also worked with musicians such as Lester Bowie , Tim Berne , Steve Lacy , Paul Lovens , Paul Rutherford , Enrico Rava , Lee Konitz , Paolo Fresu , Willem Breuker , Misha Mengelberg , Han Bennink , Marc Ducret , Yves Robert , Evan Parker , Michel Godard and Gianluigi Trovesi together. Since the 1980s he has recorded a number of albums under his own name for the jazz label Splasc (h) , such as the solo album Monk's World 1997. He was also on albums by the Jazz Chromatic Ensemble and other musicians such as Lanfranco Malaguti and, above all, Guido Mazzon ( Ooze 1982), Wirrwarr 1992, u. a. with interpretations of the Coltrane titles Ogunde and After the Rain ). In 2001 the album Voir Loin was created with Giovanni Maier , Roberto Dani and Assif Tsahar as guest musicians, with their own compositions as well as Monk and Coleman interpretations. In the same year a collaboration began with Gianluigi Trovesi in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of cellist Alfred Piatti , which in 2005 resulted in Vaghissimo Ritratto (with Fulvio Maras ).
