Barry Tuckwell (born March 5, 1931 in Melbourne , Australia ; † January 16, 2020 there ) was an Australian horn player and conductor .

Live and act

At the age of 15, Tuckwell began his orchestral career in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra . From 1955 to 1968 he was principal horn of the London Symphony Orchestra , after which he began his solo career. In 1982 he founded the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and led it as a conductor until 1998, in addition he worked as a conductor of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (Australia) and led numerous master classes.

From 1962 to 1972 he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the University of Sydney awarded him an honorary doctorate . Tuckwell wrote a horn school in English with the title Playing the horn , in which the special techniques of horn playing are explained such as double, triple and flutter tongue, stuffing, muffling, transposition and glissando.

He was the first president of the International Horn Society . There are more than 45 recordings of Tuckwell. In addition, over 20 works by contemporary composers have been written for Tuckwell.

In 2008 he received the Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Award for his services to Australian music .
