The Crazy Neighbors is a 1981 American film based on the book of the same name by Thomas Berger .

action

Earl Keese is a typical suburban citizen. He belongs to the middle class, is married with a daughter and leads a quiet, contemplative life. This is over when a younger couple moves in next door. Vic and Ramona force themselves into the family. On the one hand Earl is repulsed by the overzealous and loudmouthed Vic, on the other hand he is confused by the attractive and easy-going Ramona. He is becoming increasingly frustrated that he cannot get on with the neighbors properly. His family is of no help to him, in particular his wife deliberately ignores the peculiarities of the neighbors. Earl climbs to the brink of madness in this conflict when he suddenly changes heart. He decides to give up his suburban life and join Vic and Ramona.

criticism

Roger Ebert rated the film favorably. He liked the first hour of the film a lot better than the end, which has predictable twists and turns.

"Largely pleasing absurd comedy, which, however, remains too non-committal to be able to stand as satire."

Remarks

The Mad Neighbors was John Belushi's last film. He died in 1982 just months after the film premiered.

After its theatrical release on December 18, 1981, the film grossed over 29.9 million US dollars in the USA alone.

The original film score was written by Tom Scott . Only after test screenings found it too serious and unsuitable for the film was Bill Conti commissioned to compose a new one.

John Belushi was originally offered the role of "Vic" but wanted to play "Earl".
