The Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport ( IATA : BOS , ICAO : CWST ) is the international airport of Boston in the US state of Massachusetts . In terms of passenger volume, it was the 16th largest airport in the United States in 2018 and 53rd worldwide.

Location and transport links

Logan International Airport is located two miles east of downtown Boston. The passenger terminals have a junction on Interstate 90, which runs west of the airport . In addition, the Ted Williams Tunnel , which is now part of Interstate 90, is partially under the airport premises. Furthermore, the proceeds Massachusetts Route 1A north-west of the airport.

Logan International Airport is integrated into local public transport by the Blue Line subway line , the Silver Line SL1 and SL3 bus lines and ferries . All transportation is operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority . The subway and the SL3 bus line only stop at the airport station, which is around one kilometer northwest and north of the passenger terminals. The ferry terminal is south of Terminal A. Free shuttle buses run by the Massachusetts Port Authority operate between the airport station, the ferry terminal and the passenger terminals .

history

The airport was on 8 September 1923 under the name Boston Airport opened and initially served mainly the Massachusetts Air Guard and the Army Air Corp . The first scheduled passenger flights took place in 1927 and connected Boston with New York City .

Over the years the airport has been steadily expanded - a total of around 7 km² was added.

The airport was given its current name in 1943. The airport is named after Lieutenant General Edward Lawrence Logan , a Boston-born politician and military man who sat in the Massachusetts state legislature for several years at the beginning of the 20th century and was mainly responsible for its structure and organization of the state's National Guard. Logan died in Boston in 1939.

In 2001, Logan hit the headlines when the investigation into the September 11 attacks on New York's World Trade Center revealed that two of the hijacked planes ( American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 - both en route from Boston to Los Angeles ) - started from here. The airport's security standards were criticized.

Airport facilities

The airport area extends over approximately 688 hectares .

Runways

Air traffic is handled on six runways .

Runways 15R, 33L, 04R, 22L and 27 have an instrument landing system (ILS).
