Republic Airlines was an American airline based in Fort Snelling and based at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport .

history

Foundation and first years

Republic Airlines was founded on July 1, 1979 through the merger of North Central Airlines and Southern Airways . On October 1, 1980, the company bought the airline Hughes Airwest and became the airline that served most airports in the United States.

Merger with Northwest Orient

On January 23, 1986, the company was purchased by Northwest Airlines for $ 884 million. On October 1, 1986, the two airlines merged. The airline kept the name Northwest Airlines, created in 1934 . The hubs in Minneapolis , Detroit and Memphis , previously operated by Republic Airlines , became the backbone of Northwest's domestic network. Northwest merged with Delta Air Lines in 2010 .

Destinations

Republic Airlines served a dense network of destinations within the United States. At times, the route network comprised more domestic airports than any other US company.

  • Old Republic Airlines logos and relics can still be found today at the company's former hubs in Minneapolis and Memphis, although a rebranding took place after the merger with Northwest . The terminal formerly used in Detroit has since been demolished.
