history
The beginning of flight operations in Billings is dated to the year 1912, when a local dentist made flight tests with a self-built Curtiss 0-X-5. In 1927, it was decided to build an airport that would be suitable for regular air traffic. This was opened on May 29, 1928 under the name Billings Municipal Airport . It cost $ 5,000 to build, initially 400 acres , roughly 162 hectares . Northwest Airlines began operating scheduled flights in 1933 . Since then, the airport has been expanded and technically renewed again and again, most recently in 2003 a new tower and additional buildings for air traffic control were built. The airport has been renamed twice to date, the first time in 1957 in honor of the airport's then-incumbent manager Dick Logan. The airport was named Billings Logan Field , which was changed to Billings Logan International Airport in 1971 .
Airlines and Destinations
In scheduled flights there are several connections to the nearest hubs of major airlines. The traditional connections, which also have the largest passenger numbers, are those from United Airlines to their hub in Denver , from Delta Air Lines to Salt Lake City and from formerly Northwest Airlines , now Delta Air Lines to Minneapolis-Saint Paul . The airport is also used by the cargo airlines FedEx and UPS Airlines .
Billings is a hub of the US government's Essential Air Service program, which subsidizes flight connections to very rural areas that would otherwise not be profitable. The routes are operated by Cape Air . Previously, the flights were operated by Great Lakes Airlines and Big Sky Airlines .
