People Express ( PEOPLExpress on the outside ) was a US low-cost airline based in Newark and based at Newark Liberty International Airport there .

history

People Express was founded on April 30, 1981 as one of the first low-cost airlines in the United States and began operating in the same year. After phenomenal growth, People Express finally failed because of the takeover of the former Frontier Airlines (not to be confused with the "new" Frontier Airlines, which is still active today ). Although the merged company became the fifth largest airline in the USA, it became clear that the business models of the two airlines were simply too different to exploit synergies and to survive successfully in the market. In addition, other airlines were now also pushing their way into the low-cost airline segment. People Express was finally taken over by Continental Airlines on February 1, 1987 and fully integrated into it.

aims

People Express served numerous national destinations, but also flew to intercontinental destinations from Newark. In Canada Montreal, in Europe Brussels and London Gatwick , to Brussels a non-stop connection from San Francisco (Burbank) was later set up.
