James Shumway

James "Jim" Hyrum Shumway (born July 8, 1939 in Tempe , Arizona , † May 11, 2003 in Scottsdale , Arizona) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Life

James Hyrum Shumway was born and raised in Maricopa County in 1939 . His childhood was overshadowed by the Second World War . Shumway attended Tempe High School , where he played football. Through his sporting achievements, he received a football scholarship, which gave him the opportunity to attend Brigham Young University in Utah . He graduated with a degree in business administration . During his student days he met his future wife Lurline there. The couple married in 1958 and had four children: Lori, Beth, Caryn and Russell.

After graduating in 1960, he began working in the civil service as a voting machine mechanic for the Maricopa County Election Department. He served as the Pima County Election Director from 1976 to 1980 before becoming the first Arizona state electoral officer . When the Secretary of State of Arizona Rose Mofford took the post of Governor of Arizona in 1988, Shumway was named on April 13, 1988 as the new Secretary of State. When he ran for the post of Secretary of State of Arizona Shumway suffered a defeat in 1990. He then became Maricopa Countys Election Director - a position he held until he retired in 1994.
