Betsey Bayless

Betsey Bayless (born January 10, 1944 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Early years

Betsey Bayless was born and raised in Maricopa County in 1944 . She was the third generation to live in Arizona. The first years of her life were overshadowed by the Second World War . In 1962 she graduated from Xavier High School in Phoenix. Bayless graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin American Studies and Spanish in 1966 . She was awarded a Freeman Medal for her student achievements. During her student days, she joined the Phi Beta Kappa . She received her Masters in Public Administration from Arizona State University .

Political career

Bayless was a member of the Maricopa County County Council and served two terms as chairman. She was a director of the state Department of Administration, acting director of the state Department of Revenue, and assistant director of the Arizona Board of Regents. In 2002, she ran for the Republican nomination for Governor of Arizona. In the primaries she suffered a defeat to Matt Salmon, who in turn was defeated by Janet Napolitano in the following elections.

On September 5, 1997, she was named Secretary of State of Arizona for the remainder of Jane Dee Hull's term . She was elected for a full term on November 3, 1998. She held this post until January 6, 2003. She was succeeded by Republican Jan Brewer .

Late years

In 2005, she became chief executive officer of the Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS), Maricopa County's public hospital and health system. Bayless is credited with restoring financial stability and expanding hospital facilities at MIHS. After resigning from her post in 2013, she became President Emeritus at MIHS.

Honors

Bayless received an honorary doctorate from the University of Arizona in 2001 and the 2005 Valley Leadership Woman of the Year Award.
