Richard "Dick" D. Mahoney (born May 28, 1951 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American professor and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Richard D. Mahoney, son of Alice Phelan Doyle (1923-2011) and William Patrick Mahoney Jr. (1916-2000), was born in 1951 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Maricopa County . His family settled in the Arizona Territory in the 19th century . He belongs to the fourth generation, which is based in Arizona. His grandfather William Patrick Mahoney senior († 1967) was Sheriff of Mohave County and Senator of the Arizona Territory. William Patrick Mahoney Jr. served as Maricopa County Attorney from 1953 to 1956. On May 21, 1962, his father was appointed US ambassador to Ghana by President John F. Kennedy . His father took up his post on June 22, 1962 and held this post until May 26, 1965. Richard D. Mahoney has eight siblings.

He attended local schools in Phoenix. Then he went to Princeton University , where he in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in history ( magna cum laude ) graduate. His Ph.D. in International Relations he graduated from Johns Hopkins University - School of Advanced International Studies in 1976 . In 1979 he graduated with a Juris Doctor from Arizona State University . He also obtained a Certificat d'études primaires (CEP) in economics at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris in France .

From 1980 to 2001 he taught for 20 years as Professor of International Business Management Studies (IBMS) at the Thunderbird School of Global Management . During the 1990s he helped replace Harvard Business School from its first place as an International Business School through the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Mahoney served as Secretary of State of Arizona from 1991 to 1995 . He ran for the US Senate ( Class 1 ) seat from Arizona in 1994 and for the post of Governor of Arizona in 2002 .

After the end of his tenure as Secretary of State he became Executive Director of the Nuestra Familia Foundation in Arizona, which runs social entrepreneurship projects in two Latin American countries.

Mahoney came in 2008 to Elizabeth Evans Baker Professorship of Peace and Conflict Studies at Juniata College in Huntingdon ( Pennsylvania to). In the following years he was also the director of the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Sudies , one of the oldest and most famous institutes in the country. On July 1, 2012, he was appointed director of the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at North Carolina State University , which is part of the North Carolina State University College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Dean of North Carolina State University College of Humanities and Social Sciences Jeff Braden said the following about Mahoney:

"Dick Mahoney brings wide-ranging experience and a unique perspective to our School of Public and International Affairs. His background in politics, his interdisciplinary orientation, and his global perspective will strengthen and enhance SPIA's foundation. We are delighted to have him join us. "

Mahoney has two doctorates, one in law and the other in international relations. He lectures in three languages: Spanish, French and English. In his career, he has launched more than 30 interdisciplinary programs, degrees, and educational modules for corporate governance, both in the United States and overseas. Mahoney is regarded as one of the foremost historians in the United States regarding the Kennedy family and a John F. Kennedy Scholar at the University of Massachusetts . He writes articles and advises on international security . By 2012 he had authored four books and dozens of articles, was editor-in-chief during two presidential campaigns, designed and implemented several national communications campaigns, directed several documentaries, and authored and edited more than a dozen film scripts for feature-length films.
