Pierre Richer de Belleval (around 1564 in Châlons-en-Champagne , † November 17, 1632 in Montpellier ) was a French botanist and medicin. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Rich.Bell. ".

Life

Belleval studied medicine from 1584 at the universities of Montpellier and Avignon . License to practice medicine 1587. Afterwards he was a general practitioner in Avignon and Pézenas . In 1593 he received a chair in anatomy and botany at the Medical School in Montpellier, where he founded the Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier, the first botanical garden in France based on the model of the Botanical Garden of Padua founded in 1545, under the reign of Henry IV.

In Montpellier he began to research the flora of the Languedoc. He collected the plants and cultivated them in the botanical garden.
