The Roman Catholic Diocese of Canarias ( lat. : Dioecesis Canariensis ) is in Spain situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria .
history
In 1351 the Diocese of Telde in Gran Canaria was established for the Canary Islands by Pope Clement VI. founded. After this diocese went under in 1393, Pope Benedict XIII founded. on July 7, 1404 the Diocese of Rubicón . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan . In 1483 the bishopric was moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria .
On February 1, 1819, the diocese of Canary Islands gave up parts of its territory to establish the diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and today only includes the islands of Lanzarote , Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria . For this reason, the use of the name of the archipelago as the name of the bishopric in the Canary Islands is controversial.
