Michel Kreek (born January 16, 1971 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch football player and current coach . His greatest success as a player was winning the UEFA Cup with Ajax Amsterdam in 1992. In 1995 he played a game for the Dutch national team .

Career as a player

Michel Kreek started at the Amsterdam club De Eland SDC with club football. In his youth he moved to Ajax Amsterdam . On October 29, 1989, the then 18-year-old played for the first time for the professional team in the Eredivisie under coach Leo Beenhakker . In his first season, Kreek won the championship for the first time with Ajax, but was only substituted on twice. In the 1990/91 season, the left-footed player had his first appearances in the starting line-up and became a regular in the following season under the new coach Louis van Gaal . In its first season, Kreek won the UEFA Cup with his team . Together with players like Dennis Bergkamp , Danny Blind and Frank de Boer , he was in the starting line-up in the two finals in 1992 against Turin Calcio (2: 2, 0: 0). A year later, Kreek won the Dutch Cup with Amsterdam and his second championship with Amsterdam in 1993/94, although he had lost his regular place that season. In 1994/95 he played one league game and two Champions League games for Ajax Amsterdam. Ajax won the Champions League and again the championship that season, but Kreek left the team in autumn 1994.

Kreek moved to the Italian club Calcio Padova , who had been promoted to Serie A after 33 years . Here he was immediately seeded and scored seven goals by the end of the season. On February 22, 1995, Kreek came to a use for the Dutch national team, which remained his only. At the end of the season, his team Calcio Padova finished 14th in the Serie A, tied with CFC Genoa . According to the rules at the time, this required a playoff to avoid relegation, which Padova won 5-4 on penalties. Kreek converted the decisive last penalty. In 1995/96, Calcio Padova was bottom of the table several times early in the season. A stabilization at the beginning of the second half of the season was followed by a series of defeats with sometimes very many goals against and the club was finally relegated last. Kreek himself was a regular player until the end. With his move to promoted AC Perugia Calcio next season, he stayed in Serie A, but eventually suffered his second relegation in a row.

After a year in Perugia and a total of almost three years in Italy, he returned to the Netherlands and moved to Vitesse Arnhem . He played 150 league games for Arnhem in five years and, with the exception of 2001, always qualified for the UEFA Cup with the team. In the competition, the club never got past the 2nd round during Kreeks time there. In 2002 he left Vitesse Arnhem and joined the Greek first division club AEK Athens , who took part in the Champions League as second in the league last year. There they reached the group stage, but were eliminated after four draws in four games without Kreek being used. During this time he had to contend with injuries and occasionally only sat on the reserve bench. In Kreeks first season, Athens qualified again for the Champions League. There the team was eliminated again in the 2003/04 season and only finished in a disappointing fifth place in the league. After two years in Greece , Kreek wanted to return to the Netherlands and went to Willem II Tilburg . After further injuries, he decided to end his career on November 30, 2005 and a little later dissolved his contract in Tilburg.

During his career, Kreek played in left midfield or as a central defender.
