Dragon's Dogma ( Japanese : ド ラ ゴ ン ズ ド グ マ, Doragonzu Doguma ) is an action role-playing game developed by Capcom in 2012. The open game world gives the player a lot of freedom of action, while the game principle can be assigned to hack and slay and is therefore more action and combat-oriented.

action

At the beginning of the journey in Dragon's Dogma , the player controls the male character Savan, who moves through a cave path into a temple. After fighting a chimera , the player walks through a door to an unknown beast. This beast reappears in the world of Gransy many years later. The player who opposes it fails miserably at first. A trip to the capital Gran Soren follows. In order to get an audience with Duke Edmun, the player must complete several tasks in the city. After the audience is over, the character becomes an official member of the dragon hunt. After more adventures to be completed, an all-important battle against the dragon Grigori is waged.

Then the player is given the task of collecting 20 Lazarus stones and then facing the “last chosen one” in a fight.

Gameplay

Single player campaign

In Dragon's Dogma there is an option to play a man or a woman. This decision has different characteristics of the character: For example, a male character has more strength, a female more stamina. The nine classes included in the game are divided into three different categories. Standard classes are fighters, strings and magicians. Advanced classes include warriors, rangers, and archmages. Hybrid classes include Assassins , Mystic Knights, and Magical Archers. The player can change these classes at any time when he is in the capital Gran Soren for the first time.

The player can have up to three companions. These include, among others, the main vassal, which is created at the beginning, and two others, which are created by players in the online version, or computer-generated vassals if the offline mode is played. The vassals can have valuable information about tasks or monsters in the game. The team should thus compensate for the weaknesses of the character.

In Dragon's Dogma , an important feature is the gripping: The player can carry small boxes back and forth up to his own vassals. Among other things, it is possible to target large opponents such as B. to climb the Chimera to get to a sensitive area. Most large opponents have weak spots that are inaccessible without climbing.

The game is intended, among other things, for inexperienced players. There are strong vassals available to fight the monsters while the player needs less interaction to defeat them. Players can expect a playing time of up to 30 hours of the main game, with the side quests adding up to 70 hours and more.

Multiplayer

Dragon's Dogma does not have a direct multiplayer mode , rather the multiplayer part is to be understood in such a way that the main vassal of any other player is encountered from time to time in order to hire him, among other things. A little different than in the multiplayer of Dragon's Dogma, there are events and special events in which the players can participate, such as the primal dragon. The primal dragon is a strong character that can be fought in both online and offline mode.

development

Dragon's Dogma was developed under the leadership of Hideaki Itsuno , who was involved in the development of Resident Evil , Devil May Cry and Breath of Fire . He took over the climbing from Shadow of the Colossus . Director Hideaki Itsuno says: "In this game you can climb anything as long as it has body parts that you can attack".

The graphic style was based on Dark Souls and the Hack and Slay on Devil May Cry . Some of the fantasy elements were taken over from Breath of Fire and the combat and group system in turn from the Monster Hunter series.

Extension Dark Arisen

With the expansion Dark Arisen on April 26, 2013, the game world of Dragon's Dogma was expanded to include an approximately 15-hour side story. One day the player meets a mysterious shadow of a woman in his home village Kassardis. This shadow brings the player to the remote island of Darkmourne, where new enemies and items can be found.

Dragon's Dogma received mostly positive reviews. The page Metacritic , which collects test reports and determines an average value from the ratings, calculated a value of 78 points for the PlayStation 3 version and 75 points for the Xbox 360 version. The Windows version including the Dark Arisen add-on received 81 points. The GameRankings website determines similar values.

Jens Bischoff from 4Players sums up the gaming experience as good entertainment. The companions in particular experience a lot of criticism, as they do not behave as the player wants from time to time.

Tobias Veltin from GameStar emphasizes the technical improvement of the game in his test of the PC version. Little has happened in the plot. This fact is received positively. In addition, the combat system is a real challenge. In order to be successful, you don't have to “ just go wild ”. The control of the game, which works much more intuitively with a controller, is rated negatively here. Tobias Veltin also tested the PlayStation 3 version of Dragon's Dogma for GamePro .

In Alexander Bohn-Elias' test for Eurogamer , the game is described as "dangerous for a long time" and the tasks are always difficult. Long distances and a shortage of objects in particular cause problems for the player in the first few hours of the game. The combat system is also highlighted here. The characters in the various categories bring the right feel to the game.

Capcom sold 361,064 copies of the game during the launch week in Japan, making it the best launch for a new IP of this generation of consoles. The base game had sold around 1.3 million times by September 2013.

Continuation

On August 31, 2015, Capcom published Dragon's Dogma Online, an online title that is financed as a free-to-play game via microtransactions. It is only playable for Japanese players on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 or a Windows computer. A version for Taiwan is announced for 2017.
