Gastón Pereiro , full name Gastón Rodrigo Pereiro López , (born June 11, 1995 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan football player . He has been under contract with Cagliari Calcio since January 2020 .
Career
society
According to the club, the 1.88 meter tall midfielder Pereiro has been in the squad of the Uruguayan first division club Nacional Montevideo since at least the 2012/13 season , but was not yet used by the professionals in that season. In the following 2013/14 season he ran for the "Bolsos" in 15 top division games and scored five goals. He also played six games (no goal) in the 2014 Copa Libertadores . In the 2014/15 season he won the national championship with Nacional. He was used 24 times (six goals) in the Primera División and once (one goal) in the 2015 Copa Libertadores . On July 15, 2015 PSV Eindhoven announced the signing of Pereiro. Pereiro was given the number 7 jersey previously worn by Memphis Depay . With the Dutch, he made 29 appearances in the Eredivisie in the 2015/16 season and scored eleven goals. He was also used three times (three goals) in the KNVB Beker , once (no goal) in the Super Cup and six times (no goal) in the Champions League . His team won both the national championship title and the Johan Cruijff Schaal at the beginning of the season . In the 2016/17 season he played 30 league games (ten goals) as well as five Champions League games (no goal), two cup encounters (one goal) and one Supercup game. In January 2020 he was signed by the Italian first division club Cagliari Calcio . His transfer fee was 2 million euros.
National team
Pereiro was a member of the Uruguayan U-20 national team . At the beginning of July 2012 he was called to a training course for the U-20s by his coach Juan Verzeri . Under him he made his debut on November 27, 2012 in a 2-2 draw in the international friendly against Paraguay. In March 2014, he was also nominated for the U-20 by Verzeri's successor Fabián Coito . In the 1-0 win over Paraguay on May 20, 2014, he was in the starting line-up.
He was a member of the Uruguayan squad at the U-20 South American Championship 2015 in Uruguay. He was then one of the selected players to represent Uruguay at the 2015 U-20 World Cup in New Zealand . The "Celeste" were eliminated in the round of 16 after losing on penalties to Brazil. In total, he came to 28 international appearances in the U-20 and scored eight goals.
On May 19, 2015 he was nominated by coach Fabián Coito for the provisional squad of the U-22, which competed in July 2015 at the Pan American Games 2015 in Toronto .
In August 2017, Óscar Tabárez appointed him to the senior national team of Uruguay for the first time for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Paraguay .
