The Ljudski vrt stadium ( German Volksgarten stadium ) is a football stadium in the Slovenian city of Maribor . It seats 12,702 spectators and is the home of the NK Maribor football club , which, as record champions, is one of the top teams in the Slovenian first division . In addition, home games of the Slovenian national football team take place in the Ljudski vrt stadium .
history
The Ljudski vrt stadium was built in 1962. The predecessor of this stadium was the Volkspark in Maribor, which was commissioned in 1873 and in 1920 became the first football stadium in Slovenia, which was then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia . After the old stadium became dilapidated, a new stadium began to be built in Maribor in 1952. This arena, which was completed in 1962, was named Stadion Ljudski vrt . The stadium was built almost from scratch between 2006 and 2008 - only the main stand, built in 1964, remained. After the completion of the renovation work, the stadium had a capacity of 12,435 covered seats, which was increased again to 12,881 seats in 2010. In the course of the stadium renovation, a shopping center was also integrated into the new stands. The reopening was celebrated on May 10, 2008 at the championship game between NK Maribor and NK Nafta Lendava .
The Ljudski vrt stadium is the third largest stadium in Slovenia after the Stožice stadium and the Petrol arena, and since 2008 it has also hosted matches for the Slovenian national soccer team, which has twice participated in the soccer world championships. It is also the home stadium of the top Slovenian club NK Maribor, which to date has been Slovenian champions 13 times, Slovenian cup winners eight times and the Intertoto Cup once. From 2009 until the opening of the Stožice stadium, the cup final and the Supercup final took place in Ljudski vrt.
